Hormone Replacement Therapy

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) replaces hormones that naturally decline during perimenopause and menopause. For many women, HRT is a safe and effective treatment that can significantly improve symptoms, quality of life and long-term health.
At Hurst Menopause & Wellness Clinic, our experienced GP menopause specialist provides personalised, evidence-based HRT treatment tailored to your individual needs and health goals. As a private menopause clinic in Sussex, serving Brighton, Hove and Haywards Heath, we offer specialist menopause consultations, HRT prescribing and ongoing support to help women feel their best throughout midlife and beyond.
Book your consultation today to start your journey towards feeling healthier, stronger and more balanced, or continue reading to learn more about the hormones involved in menopause and how treatment may help.
Women naturally produce a range of hormones that fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle and change significantly during perimenopause and menopause. The three key hormones involved are oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone. As hormone levels change, many women experience symptoms that can affect physical health, emotional wellbeing, sleep, confidence and quality of life.

Oestrogen

Oestrogen is primarily produced by the ovaries and plays an essential role in female development, reproductive health, and the regulation of menstrual cycles. During menopause, oestrogen production declines substantially, which can lead to a variety of symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, mood changes, and vaginal dryness.
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can restore oestrogen levels and is available in several forms, including skin patches, gels, sprays, and tablets. Many of these preparations contain "body-identical" oestrogen, meaning they closely resemble the hormone naturally produced by the body.

Progesterone

Progesterone is produced after ovulation during the second half of the menstrual cycle. It helps prepare the uterus for pregnancy and supports menstrual cycle regulation.
For women using oestrogen therapy who still have a womb, progesterone or a similar hormone (progestogen) is required to protect the lining of the uterus and reduce the risk of endometrial cancer.
Some common treatment options include:
  • Micronised progesterone capsules (such as Utrogestan), which are structurally identical to the progesterone naturally produced by the body.
  • The Mirena intrauterine system (IUS), which releases progestogen directly into the uterus, provides contraception, and may help reduce or stop heavy menstrual bleeding.
  • Combined HRT patches, which contain both oestrogen and progestogen in a single treatment and may offer greater convenience for some women.

Testosterone

Testosterone is an important hormone for women and plays a role in libido, energy, motivation, mood, concentration and sexual wellbeing. During perimenopause and menopause, testosterone levels can decline, and some women may experience symptoms such as low libido, fatigue, brain fog, reduced confidence and loss of motivation.

For selected women, female testosterone therapy may help improve these symptoms as part of a personalised menopause treatment plan. At Hurst Menopause & Wellness Clinic, our menopause specialist provides personalised testosterone consultations and ongoing monitoring tailored to your individual symptoms and treatment.

Before starting testosterone therapy, a blood test is required to assess your baseline hormone levels. Ongoing blood test monitoring helps ensure treatment remains safe and testosterone levels stay within the recommended female range.
